Brave Rail Staff Member Suffers Life-Threatening Wounds Amid Multiple Stabbing Attack on High-Speed Service

A courageous railway staff member who intervened to save travelers during a multiple knife incident on a express train has sustained critical wounds, police stated on Sunday.

Details of the Terrifying Incident

Surveillance video allegedly shows the staff member trying to stop the assailant as the train journeyed between a city and another station in Cambridgeshire. Bystanders recounted a terrifying 14-minute period after the train left Peterborough, with injured passengers fleeing through carriages.

The individual, a 32-year-old British national from Peterborough, is in custody for questioning. Police declared a significant incident on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in downtown London.

Crisis Response and Consequences

The event on Saturday night resulted in 11 people being treated in hospital after the train made an unscheduled stop at the station in Huntingdon. Five individuals have since been released from medical care.

A witness recorded the suspect brandishing a large knife and being subdued with a stun device as he confronted police on the station. He was reportedly heard yelling, "Kill me, end my life."

“This was a horrific attack that has had a wide impact. My thoughts and those of everyone in British Transport Police are with those injured and their families – especially the brave member of rail staff whose relatives are being assisted by trained personnel,” said a high-ranking law enforcement officer.

Labor Response and Appeals for Action

Train associations were quick to praise staff and demand increased measures. A union official said he would be “seeking urgent meetings with government, train companies and police to guarantee that we have the best possible support, resources and effective procedures in place”.

A different association representative encouraged the rail company and government “to act swiftly to examine security, to help the affected workers, and to ensure nothing like this occurs again”.

Operator Praised for Rapid Thinking

The operator who stopped the service at Huntingdon was reported as being “deeply affected” but “well”, and has been praised by union officials for doing “precisely what was needed”.

“The driver did not halt the train in the middle of two stops where it’s clearly difficult for the emergency services to reach, but he continued going until he got to Huntingdon, where the assistance was almost already there,” explained a union representative.

Further Details

Police said they got the first emergency calls at 7:39 pm, and the service was compelled to make an unplanned stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.

An witness described initially wondering if the situation was a Halloween joke, but soon realized from individuals' faces that it was serious.

Authorities have confirmed there is no evidence to suggest the event was a terror-related incident and have requested the public to provide with any further information.

Train services on the affected route are expected to have delays until Monday, with passengers advised to postpone their travel where possible.

Individuals with information that could help the inquiry are asked to reach authorities by sending a message a designated number with a case code.
