Former Sergeant Major Sentenced for Sexual Offense on 19-Year-Old Soldier

An ex- service sergeant has been sentenced to six months in custody for sexually assaulting a young gunner who later ended her life.

Warrant Officer the former sergeant, in his forties, held down Royal Artillery Gunner the victim and tried to make physical contact in the summer of 2021. She was found dead half a year following in her quarters at the Wiltshire base.

He told the convicted individual: "She had the bravery and wisdom to instruct you to cease and told you to leave the area, but you persisted to the extent she considered she wouldn't be safe from you even when she returned to her personal quarters."

He added: "The next morning, she made the complaint to her loved ones, her acquaintances and her commanding officers."

"After the complaint, the unit chose to handle the situation with minimal consequences."

"You were interviewed and you admitted your actions had been improper. You prepared a written apology."

"Your career proceeded unimpeded and you were subsequently advanced to Warrant Officer 1."

Further Details

At the investigation into the tragic passing, the coroner said Capt James Hook influenced her to cease proceedings, and just informed it to a higher command "after information had leaked."

At the period, the accused was given a "minor administrative action interview" with no further consequences.

The inquest was also told that just weeks after the violation the servicewoman had additionally been facing "persistent mistreatment" by a different service member.

Another soldier, her superior officer, transmitted to her numerous text messages confessing his feelings for her, accompanied by a fifteen-page "romantic narrative" detailing his "imagined scenarios."
