Hamas representatives and Israeli delegates start mediated discussions in Egypt on Trump's Palestinian ceasefire initiative.

Conflict zone News Agency
Israel has been carrying out an offensive in the northern Gaza Strip for an extended period.

Indirect talks working toward a comprehensive deal on a Trump administration initiative to halt hostilities in Gaza have begun in the mediation venue of Sharm El-Sheikh.

Palestinian and Egyptian officials have stated that the discussions are concentrating on "creating the field conditions" for a possible exchange that would see the freeing of all Israeli hostages in return for a number of detained Palestinians.

Officials declared it agrees to the ceasefire initiative in part, but has omitted reference to several key demands - including its military demobilization and future role in Gaza.

The Israeli leader said on Saturday that he expected to reveal the freeing of captives "in the coming days"

Conflict Timeline

The discussions, which will involve regional and international officials conducting mediation with teams from both Israel and Hamas individually, take place on the approach of the two-year mark of the Hamas-led attack on Israeli territories on October 7th, in which nearly 1,200 people were fatally wounded and 251 individuals were seized.

The defense forces began military actions in Gaza in countermeasure. Since then, 67,160 have been killed by Israeli military operations in Gaza, as reported by the region's Hamas-run health ministry.

Peace Plan Details

The 20-point plan, which has been endorsed by the Trump administration and Israeli officials, outlines an quick halt to fighting and the freeing of 48 captives, only 20 of whom are considered surviving, in exchange for numerous of incarcerated individuals.

The framework requires that once both sides agree to the proposal "full aid will be quickly dispatched into the conflict zone"

It also declares that Hamas would have no participation in governing Gaza, and it permits an future Palestinian sovereignty.

Recent Developments

Recently, officials replied to the plan in a announcement, in which the group consented "to release all Israeli prisoners, both alive and killed, following the exchange formula outlined in the American plan" - if the required situation for the swaps are met.

It omitted reference to or endorse the comprehensive proposal but said it "renews its agreement to relinquish the administration of the Gaza Strip to a local administration of independents, founded on Palestinian national consensus and regional endorsement"

The declaration made no mention of one of the key demands of the plan – that the militant group consent to its weapons surrender and to having no future involvement in the governance of Gaza.

International Response

Many Palestinians portrayed Hamas' response to the ceasefire proposal as surprising, after multiple days of suggestions that the faction was preparing to reject or at least substantially modify its acceptance of the US framework.

Conversely, the militant group refrained from including its customary boundaries in the public announcement, a decision many consider a evidence of international influence.

Global and local officials have supported the proposal. The local administration, which governs parts of the Palestinian territories, has called the American initiatives as "authentic and resolute"

The Persian nation - which has been one of the group's primary supporters for many years - has also now signalled its support for the American initiative.

Current Situation

Military strikes continued in multiple areas of the Palestinian territory on the beginning of the week before the talks beginning.

Defense personnel is conducting an combat campaign in the metropolitan region, which it has stated is aimed at securing the freeing of the remaining hostages.

A spokesperson, speaking for Gaza's local emergency services, stated that "humanitarian convoys have been permitted entry to Gaza City since the campaign commenced recently"

"Victims remain we are unable to recover from locations under defense force authority" he said.

Hundreds of thousands of the urban center have been forced to flee after the armed services required departures to a established protection region in the southern region, but further countless people are considered to have persisted.

Israel's defence minister has warned that those who stay during the offensive would be "combatants and their sympathizers"

In the recent period, 21 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza and a further 96 harmed, the Hamas-run health ministry said in its current assessment.

International journalists have been prohibited by the government from entering the Palestinian territory without supervision since the start of the war, making verifying claims from the conflicting groups problematic.
