‘It appears magical’: does light therapy actually deliver clearer skin, healthier teeth, and more resilient joints?

Light therapy is certainly having a surge in popularity. There are now available light-emitting tools for everything from complexion problems and aging signs along with muscle pain and oral inflammation, the newest innovation is a toothbrush enhanced with tiny red LEDs, described by its makers as “a major advance for domestic dental hygiene.” Globally, the sector valued at $1bn last year is expected to increase to $1.8bn within the next decade. There are even infrared saunas available, where instead of hot coals (real or electric) heating the air, the infrared radiation heats your body itself. As claimed by enthusiasts, it feels similar to a full-body light therapy session, boosting skin collagen, relaxing muscles, reducing swelling and chronic health conditions while protecting against dementia.

Understanding the Evidence

“It sounds a bit like witchcraft,” observes Paul Chazot, professor in neuroscience at Durham University and a convert to the value of light therapy. Naturally, we know light influences biological functions. Sunlight helps us make vitamin D, essential for skeletal strength, immune function, and muscular health. Light exposure controls our sleep-wake cycles, too, activating brain chemicals and hormonal responses in daylight, and preparing the body for rest as darkness falls. Daylight-simulating devices frequently help individuals with seasonal depression to combat seasonal emotional slumps. Undoubtedly, light plays a vital role in human health.

Various Phototherapy Approaches

Whereas seasonal affective disorder devices typically employ blue-range light, the majority of phototherapy tools use red or near-infrared wavelengths. During advanced medical investigations, such as Chazot’s investigations into the effects of infrared on brain cells, identifying the optimal wavelength is crucial. Light constitutes electromagnetic energy, extending from long-wavelength radiation to high-energy gamma radiation. Light-based treatment utilizes intermediate light frequencies, the highest energy of those being invisible ultraviolet, then visible light (all the colours we see in a rainbow) and infrared light visible through night vision technology.

Ultraviolet treatment has been employed by skin specialists for decades to manage persistent skin disorders including eczema and psoriasis. It works on the immune system within cells, “and suppresses swelling,” explains a dermatology expert. “There’s lots of evidence for phototherapy.” UVA reaches deeper skin layers compared to UVB, whereas the LEDs we see on consumer light-therapy devices (usually producing colored light emissions) “generally affect surface layers.”

Risk Assessment and Professional Supervision

UVB radiation effects, such as burning or tanning, are well known but in medical devices the light is delivered in a “narrow-band” form – signifying focused frequency bands – which minimises the risks. “Therapy is overseen by qualified practitioners, thus exposure is controlled,” says Ho. Essentially, the light sources are adjusted by technical experts, “to confirm suitable light frequency output – unlike in tanning salons, where oversight might be limited, and we don’t really know what wavelengths are being used.”

Home Devices and Scientific Uncertainty

Red and blue light sources, he notes, “aren’t typically employed clinically, but could assist with specific concerns.” Red wavelength therapy, proponents claim, help boost blood circulation, oxygen utilization and dermal rejuvenation, and stimulate collagen production – a primary objective in youth preservation. “Research exists,” says Ho. “However, it’s limited.” Regardless, amid the sea of devices now available, “it’s unclear if device outputs match study parameters. Appropriate exposure periods aren’t established, ideal distance from skin surface, if benefits outweigh potential risks. There are lots of questions.”

Treatment Areas and Specialist Views

Initial blue-light devices addressed acne bacteria, microorganisms connected to breakouts. Scientific backing remains inadequate for regular prescription – even though, notes the dermatologist, “it’s frequently employed in beauty centers.” Certain patients incorporate it into their regimen, he observes, though when purchasing home devices, “we recommend careful testing and security confirmation. Without proper medical classification, the regulation is a bit grey.”

Advanced Research and Cellular Mechanisms

At the same time, in a far-flung field of pioneering medical science, scientists have been studying cerebral tissue, discovering multiple mechanisms for infrared’s cellular benefits. “Pretty much everything I did with the light at that particular wavelength was positive and protective,” he says. It is partly these many and varied positive effects on cellular health that have driven skepticism about light therapy – that results appear unrealistic. However, scientific investigation has altered his perspective.

The researcher primarily focuses on pharmaceutical solutions for brain disorders, though twenty years earlier, a GP who was developing an antiviral light treatment for cold sores sought his expertise as a biologist. “He developed equipment for cellular and insect experiments,” he says. “I was pretty sceptical. The specific wavelength measured approximately 1070nm, that nobody believed did anything biological.”

Its beneficial characteristic, however, was its ability to transmit through aqueous environments, allowing substantial bodily penetration.

Cellular Energy and Neurological Benefits

Growing data suggested infrared influenced energy-producing organelles. Mitochondria produce ATP for cell function, producing fuel for biological processes. “All human cells contain mitochondria, including the brain,” explains the neuroscientist, who prioritized neurological investigations. “It has been shown that in humans this light therapy increases blood flow into the brain, which is always very good.”

With 1070 treatment, cellular power plants create limited oxidative molecules. In low doses this substance, explains the expert, “stimulates so-called chaperone proteins which look after your mitochondria, look after your cells and also deal with the unwanted proteins.”

These processes show potential for neurological conditions: oxidative protection, swelling control, and pro-autophagy – autophagy being the process the cell uses to clear unwanted damaging proteins.

Ongoing Study Progress and Specialist Evaluations

Upon examining current studies on light therapy for dementia, he reports, about 400 people were taking part in four studies, comprising his early research projects
