Minecraft's Mounts of Mayhem Drop Introduces a Stunningly Wild New Spear to Your World
The seasonal content update for Minecraft has landed — and it includes the first new weapon added to the game since the heavy club made its debut. The lance is now available and it might just alter your gameplay in Minecraft, particularly when you love chaos.
A Weapon Forged for Mounted Mayhem
The Mayhem Mounts drop also incorporates a host of fresh elements and enhancements centered around riding animals in the game. That driving concept made the spear the perfect fit for this update, as the development team had already known it was time for a new weapon.
"We knew initially that we desired a fresh armament that would increase combat distance, and we wanted it to be fighting from atop a creature," noted a senior product manager. "We prototyped a number of concepts, but the lance was the one that both handled superbly when we tested our prototypes and also made sense for the intended purpose."
If you're wondering whether fighting from a saddle means you can tilt at your allies on steeds, the answer is a resounding yes. In fact, there's even an offensive action ideally crafted for it.
"Mounted lance combat] is a major applications for the spear, and it's a blast," the developer continues. "The spear has two attacks: You have the quick stab, where you just stab your enemy. But you also have a powerful lance where you lower your spear and get more damage [with] the more pace you have. So [it’s] ideal for mounted duels."
Aerial Mayhem & Deep-Sea Exploration
The unruly pleasure can extend beyond there, though. If you're advanced sufficiently into the game that you've explored The End, the developers have an even more ridiculous idea. "If you are in the end-game, [spears are] ideal for equipping the elytra and taking to the skies and unleashing absolute pandemonium," she suggests.
In other words: Sky jousting is now a reality, and it should be made an Olympic sport without delay.
Another major addition in this latest drop is the underwater mount. This underwater creature, which is inspired by the nautilus shells players have gathered for years, can be domesticated and ridden for underwater travel. Not only will it carry you through the water quicker than swimming, it'll also maintain your air supply, so there's no necessity to return to the surface for a breath.
The other inclusions are mostly things that seek your demise, as is the nature of Minecraft. As expected, there's also a rotting sea creature popping up in the water, frequently with a Drowned on its back. If you succeed in take care of the Drowned, though, you can befriend the zombie Nautilus — or the standard version, for that matter — with a spiky fish.
"We've been thinking about this problem on and off, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it seemed like the perfect moment to also unveil something for the ocean depths," the developer explains. "For the Nautilus in particular, we had a few different ideas for sea mounts that we wanted to experiment with, but the Nautilus concept art looked compelling, and we have the link to the Nautilus shell that was already in the game."
She also notes that there are actually two distinct kinds of undead nautilus: standard and coral-infested undead mount. "[The variants] give some flavor to what you find underwater."
Parched Perils & Overdue Enhancements
Additional features include the Parched, desert-exclusive skeletons that can endure the sun, which means there's no refuge from them if you find yourself in that region. Sometimes you'll see them on camel husks, another new mob. Camel husks have an notable look that sees their ribs poking out. The applies equally to undead steeds, who have a analogous rib-popping design and can sometimes be encountered after dark with a spear-carrying zombie on their back.
The remaining updates on the drop's list are smaller gameplay updates, including some much-anticipated changes to equestrian travel. Now, you can traverse bodies of water while riding a horse. Furthermore, netherite horse armor is now obtainable at the workbench, so you can provide your steed with the ultimate protection it deserves.
A Spicy Send-Off for the Year
In summary, the last content update of the year is a notable addition. The spear on its own — and the potential for chaos — would have felt like a significant enhancement. Add in the Nautilus, and additional creatures seeking your end, and Minecraft's definitely getting a little more dangerous.
The Mounts of Mayhem content drop is out now for all major editions of Minecraft.
