One-time National Football League player Antonio Brown is traveling to Miami to face an attempted murder accusation related to a shooting that happened in May, with his attorney filing a innocent declaration on his behalf.

Jail records in Essex, New Jersey, indicate that Brown was freed on Tuesday morning for his move to the state of Florida. Brown, among the most famous players in the National Football League, had forgone extradition to Florida from New Jersey, where he was detained after being arrested in the city of Dubai.

Brown’s attorney, Mark Eiglarsh, stated in an email that he has already lodged a formal not guilty response to the murder attempt allegation. Brown could be in a Miami courtroom as early as Wednesday early for a release hearing, Eiglarsh said.

Based on his detention document, Brown is alleged of grabbing a pistol from a protection guard after a star boxing bout in May and shooting multiple shots at a man he had clashed with previously. The reported target, Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, informed police that one shot grazed his neck.

Eiglarsh said that Brown was simply protecting himself from Nantambu.

“The steps he was forced to take were solely in defense against the alleged person’s violent behavior. Brown was attacked that time and behaved within his legal privilege to defend himself,” Eiglarsh said.

Brown was not immediately apprehended because originally authorities did not consider Nantambu as a victim. It wasn’t until subsequently in May that Nantambu delivered a full testimony about the situation to authorities and pointed out Brown as the gunman, the affidavit says.

According to his digital posts, Brown had been staying in the city of Dubai for a number of months. In a update after the incident, Brown stated he was protecting himself because he was “assaulted by multiple individuals who tried to take my valuables and bring physical injury to me.”

A second-degree murder attempt charge in Florida imposes a maximum 15-year prison penalty and up to a $10,000 fee in the instance of a conviction.

Brown has encountered several legal problems over the years. He earlier had been charged of physical attack of a vehicle operator, several abuse allegations, inability to pay parental support and additional occurrences.
